Another Hammer Film at the Marchesa for an Austin Film Society screening.
Hammer had scored a hit with their film version of Dracula, starring Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. They wanted to make a follow up, but were unable to get Christopher Lee to reprise Dracula so instead they created Baron Meinster as the vampire of the story. While AFS programer Lars asked us to focus on the portrayal of Van Helsing by Peter Cushing, I felt that Miles Malleson as Dr. Tobler the pill popping alcholic who appears for far too few scenes. That said Cushing does crush it and Hammer creates a pretty vampire film that is worth watching.
